Even though the old priest already knew what would happen every step of the way, it was still fascinating to watch as he threaded his way north on side streets and county roads. The massive Ford F-450 Super-Duty pickup truck had dual gas tanks and had been fully fueled when heâd âacquiredâ it. The horses were happy enough to be fed and brushed the few times heâd stopped. He had even taken the time to sleep once night fell, parking the truck and trailer in a farmerâs hay barn, which also served to provide fodder for the horses. The farmer himself had been happy to help when asked by the traveling priest, as Patrick had already known he would be.
Filling up the expended fuel from another farmâs diesel storage tank gave him no pause. He knew the four digit code to turn on the pump from gaming out a couple dozen attempts in his mind and he knew that some very important people would need the fuel, soon. It was, in some ways, part of his job to get it there for them.
And now, heâd finally reached his next waypoint. It was at this point that future possibilities for himself truly began to diverge. He had a choice. He absolutely had to get a certain young man to his destiny, there was no question about that, but the manner in which he did so would affect many others as well. Sadly, he had no idea what was happening with them now, as this was before he physically came in contact with either of them. That wasnât how the visions worked. They showed everything forward of contact, not before.
He could enlist the help of a young man and his daughter that would arrive in about four hours, preventing the little girl from reaching her mother and endangering the life of the girlâs father, but saving the manâs sister⦠or he could ride to the rescue himself, where the sister would almost certainly perish, but the man would remain unharmed. Both methods would eventually succeed in getting a certain young man to safety, but more people would die in the one, as opposed to the other.
Both paths also led to his own death, of course. He had already accepted this. His only goal anymore was to create the greatest good for humanity before he was gone.
For his own future, he could not see past his own death. Once the present reached the point of decision and the decision was made, the action taken, all other paths and probabilities, every other probable future that hadnât been and never was, would vanish from his mind as if they had never existed, which in truth, they never had. And his available futures were quickly diminishing.
He knew he was going to die soon. He just wanted to make it mean something and in the end, he chose the path with less death for those who he would save. He would risk the life of the man to save the sister.
